Cell Phone - Apology!

Hi Everyone,

If you've tried to call me on my cell phone recently you probably think I'm ignoring you. After being dropped several times, the ringer and some other functions stopped working. I was waiting to get a new "new every two" phone so that I didn't have to pay for one. I thought I was eligible at the end of October but guess what??? I've been eligible for a new phone since the beginning of June!!! I just got my new phone and now I'm busily programming my numbers into it.

Call me so I don't have to program you back in! LOL

I've been a Rays fan since their beginning and I'm so happy they've gotten this far this season. I won't be able to watch the whole game on Wednesday because I'll be teaching class but I will be thinking about them. Go Rays!!!

Cost: $20 + supplies

Time: 6:15pm - 8:45pm

Beadfest!

Mindy, Eileen, Mef and I went on a "beadventure" to Beadfest last week. Too bad more of you couldn't make it.

We had a great time and came home with LOTS of new beads and things. We look at things differently now and think to ourselves (OK some of us think out loud!!!) "hmmm, how can I bead that." Eileen got the award for buying the most Swarovski crystals in one day. LOL

When I start making things with my new goodies I'll share pictures with you.

Hope to see you soon!

Happy beading!

Delicas Anyone???

Hi Everyone,

I hope you're all having a nice summer.

As many of you know, I belong to several bulk buy groups online. One of them is having a buy on seed beads and delicas. The prices are fantastic.

In case you didn't notice, AC Moore drastically cut their selection of delicas when they did their recent jewelry reset.

Delicas are the almost perfectly uniform beads I use in peyote stitch. (I LOVE THEM!!!) Someone recently told me how they explain the difference between seed beads and delicas. Seed beads are like mini donuts and delicas are like mini toilet paper rolls.

If you would be interested in participating in this buy please let me know and I'll give you the details. I would need your orders by 11:59pm Saturday night.

Happy Beading!

Julie :-)

Class Suggestions?

Hi Everyone,

I have to get my October class schedule together.

Is there something you'd like to learn that hasn't been covered in a class yet? Or maybe there was a class you wanted to take but you couldn't make it the night it was held. Did you see something in a magazine, ad or catalogue and wondered if you could make it?

Send me an email and let me know. I'll try to accommodate you.

Happy beading!

Julie :-)

Bead Swap Anyone?

Is anyone interested in a bead swap? I thought we could hold these during our monthly Bead Social/UFO Nights.

I have a lot of leftover beads and beads that I bought with good intentions of using but just haven't. I'd like these beads to go to a new home where they'll be appreciated and used.

For those of you who are interested, please bring along a small bag of beads to class. We'll discuss swap rules tonight.

Julie :-)

UFOs Are Taking Over!

This month I've become over run with UFOs. I start a project and before I finish it I've started something new. Is this happening to you? I'm not sure if it's an attention thing or the fact that there are SO many projects running through my head. LOL

Tonight is the PERFECT night to gather up those partially completed projects and spend a few hours working on them.

Here's the description for tonight's class:

Bead Social/UFO Night (All Levels)
Have UFOs landed at YOUR house??? Gather them up/dust them off and bring them to the monthly Bead Social. Don't bead alone! Peyote Stitch Class Part 2 - July 23rd

Ooops! I forgot to post about tonight's class.

This week I'll be showing you several techniques to embellish your plain peyote stitch bracelet.

I'll give you some basic techniques but as you'll see, the sky's the limit!

Make sure to have your basic bracelet completed before class. I'll show you several clasp options and then we'll get into embellishment.

You'll need small, medium and large beads to compliment or accent your basic bracelet.

Hope to see you tonight!

Peyote Stitch Classes

I'm really looking forward to teaching class the next 2 weeks.

Peyote stitch was something I wanted to learn for a long time but for some reason I just wasn't getting it. After several attempts (and failures) I received an AWESOME tip from somone. (Sorry - I'm not going to tell you here. You'll have to come to class!) That tip made all the difference in the world. Peyote stitch is now one of my favorite stitches.

If you come to class this week you'll see what I mean. With so many different colors and sizes of beads the possibilities for creating beautiful jewelry pieces are only limited by your imagination.

In this week's class you'll learn even count peyote stitch to create a basic bracelet. During next week's class you will learn how to add the clasp and several embellishment techniques to make your bracelet truly unique.

You do not need to take both classes. Some students already know peyote stitch and some students only want to learn how to do peyote stitch.

If you are planning to take this class please send me an email so that I know how many students to prepare for.

Please feel free to email any questions or pictures of your bead creations.

Hope to see you soon. Happy beading!

Julie :-)

Embellished Peyote Stitch Bracelet (Part 1) - July 16

This is a beginner/intermediate class.

Peyote stitch is probably the most popular beading stitch - but not always the easiest to learn! Through trial and error I've come up with a method I think everyone will be able to get the hang of. This class will cover basic even count peyote stitch. Students will make a basic peyote strip to be used as the bracelet base during Part 1 of this class and add the clasp and embellishment in the next class. Some work at home between classes may be required. THIS IS A STITCH CLASS USING NEEDLE AND THREAD. ~~ YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE BOTH PARTS OF CLASS.
(Limit 8 students)

Supplies: Size 6 or 8 seed beads (for bracelet base), assorted beads/embellishments (to be used in Part 2 of the class), beading thread or braided fishing line, Thread Heaven or similar thread conditioner, beading needles, 3-hole bar clasp (or similar), bead mat
Cost: $20 + supplies

If you plan to attend this class please e-mail me so that I know you're coming. AC Moore is enforcing the minimum 2 student rule so if there aren't at least 2 students signed up 48 hours in advance the class will be cancelled.

All Fixed (I hope!!!)

Cablevision/Optimum was here for several hours yesterday rewiring my house. It's so nice to turn on my computer and have immediate internet access. I have a working phone now too!

If any of you have e-mailed or called and you haven't heard back from me I apologize. I have only had sporadic internet and phone access for the past month. Things should be much better from now on.

Back to my messages...

Happy beading!

Bead Swap?

Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if you'd be interested in a bead swap. I know lots of us have beads we haven't used in a while or will never use. I was thinking of having them during the Bead Social/UFO nights. Each participant will bring a small ziploc bag containing at least 10 usable beads. I'll gather them up and then we'll draw numbers to see who gets what.

Let me know what you think.

Julie :-)

Right Angle Weave - Samples

Sorry that I haven't been posting samples lately. My scanner still isn't working so I took some pictures with my camera.

Double row RAW using silver and gold plated 4mm beads.

Single row RAW using 6mm pearls and crystals.

As you can see, the size, color and shape of the beads can produce a variety of results.

For the first project, it would be best to use round beads between 4-6mm. Once you get the hang of the stitch you can move to different shapes, colors and sizes.

Hope to see you in class!

Items I'm Looking For...

Yesterday's bead show really got my creative juices flowing. When I got home I sketched out a lot of pieces. I'm getting on sort of a "trash to treasure" altered art kick. Now I just need to find all of the items I need.

Here's a list of what I'm looking for:
  • chopsticks (not the wooden ones from take out)
  • game pieces
  • dominoes
  • vintage clip art/pictures
  • buttons
  • lace/ribbon
  • metal tins from mints or candy
  • scrabble tiles
  • tri-ominoes
  • bottle caps from soda and/or beer bottles
  • microscope slides
  • old charms
  • cigar boxes
  • old/foreign stamps

If you have any of these items floating around your house and you'd like to get rid of them let me know. I will gladly give them a new home.

Thanks!

Julie :-)

Innovative Beads Expo on Saturday

Five of us met for a beadventure down to the Innovative Beads Expo in Edison on Saturday. Mindy drove again. (THANK YOU! THANK YOU!) We're going to have to come up with a nickname for her mini-van! LOL

As usual, there was a huge selection of beads, findings, fibers, etc. which results in brain overload imaging all of the creative possibilities. I was able to restrain myself and only bought what I REALLY needed. Others though, were unable to control their spending. :-) I can't wait to see what we all make from the goodies we bought.

As soon as I get some things made I'll post them.

Hope to see you soon! Happy beading!

What Have YOU Made?

If you've taken one (or more) of my classes I hope you learned something and, most of all, enjoyed yourself.

I'd love so see some of the things you've made. Please send me a picture or pictures or a link to your photo album so that I can post them and share them with the others (no, not THE Others!!! LOL).

If there's something you want to learn or need a refresher on please let me know and I'll try to schedule it for an upcoming class. You can leave me a comment or send me an email.

Happy beading!

Charmed, I'm Sure... - April 9th

This week's class should be a lot of fun.

Beaded Charm/Treasure Bracelet (Beginner/Intermediate)
Do you have special beads and charms from old jewelry that you'd like to make into something new? Or perhaps you have a lot of “orphan” beads leftover from previous projects and don't know what to do with them. Pick a theme or just use a little of this and that. In this class you'll learn several techniques to attach bead components to a metal chain and make your own charm bracelet. Bracelet will be started in class but probably not completed.
(Limit 8 students)

Supplies: Assortment of beads, charms and spacers, empty charm bracelet chain, 2” head pins
Cost: $20 + supplies

Happy Beading!

Beading Basics - April 2nd

This week's class is good for beginners and a refresher for others...

Love beads but aren’t sure how to get started making your own jewelry? This is the class for you. This very useful beginner’s class has lots of information that you will use throughout your jewelry making years. We'll work on layout and design basics, stringing, finishing, and how to use tools. Students will be able to go home with a completed bracelet or necklace. This class is suitable for children 12 and older and adults.
(Limit 8 students)

Supplies: Assortment of beads, stringing material (ex. Beadalon), findings (clasp, crimps), a bead board and basic beading/jewelry making kit is also recommended
Cost: $20 + supplies

If you're going to be attending class please send me an email so I know how many copies of the handouts to bring.

Hope to see you soon!

Happy Spring!

You know you've been looking in the stores at all of the new jewelry trends for Spring. Come to a class and learn how to make the jewelry yourself. Now that the weather's getting better there's no excuse for not coming out to a class.

I'm trying to offer at least one stringing, stitch and wire class each month. In order to be able to complete a project during the allotted class time and wear it home, I'm concentrating on smaller projects. If you'd be interested in larger projects they would have to be 2-part classes or longer workshops on the weekends. If you would be interested in either of these please let me know.

Don't forget that when you sign up for a class you receive 10% off all of your class supplies.

Hope to see you soon!

There will be no specific instruction but lots of one-on-one time with students. Fireline Sale at Dick's Sporting Goods

I was just going through the ads from today's paper and saw Fireline on the cover of the Dick's Sporting Goods ad.

This is the beading material I usually recommend for bead weaving projects.

It is on sale this week for $12.98 (reg. $14.99). On top of that there is a $5 mail-in rebate. The final cost is $7.98. That's a great price. I recommend 4lb. or 6lb. test.

If you'd like me to pick some up for you and bring it class on Wednesday night just let me know.

Happy beading!

Julie :-)

Peyote Stitch Beaded Beads - March 19

Peyote stitch is probably the most popular beading stitch - but not always the easiest to learn! Through trial and error I've come up with a method I think everyone will be able to get the hang of. This class will cover basic even count peyote stitch. We'll make several small strips that will be closed up and made into tube beads. These beaded beads will be combined with other beads to create earrings, a bracelet or necklace. Students should be able to make at least two beaded beads in class to complete a pair of earrings. THIS IS A STITCH CLASS USING NEEDLE AND THREAD.
(Limit 8 students)

Supplies: Several colors of delica or size 10 seed beads, assorted other beads, beading thread or braided fishing line, beading needles (at least 2), stringing material (ex. Beadalon), findings (ear wires, clasp, crimps)
Cost: $20 + supplies

All classes are on Wednesdays from 6:15pm - 8:45pm at AC Moore Dover/Rockaway. Make sure to sign-up at least 48 hours in advance.

If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment or email me at jewelrybyjules @ aol.com (remove spaces).

Hope to see you soon. Happy beading!

Fireline Rebate

I just found out that there's a rebate for my FAVORITE stringing material - Berkley Fireline. Yes, it IS fishing line. It's not regular fishing line though. This is braided monofilament. It works great for almost all bead weaving projects. It doesn't fray, holds knots and doesn't need thread conditioner. I usually use the smoke or crystal color in 4lb. or 6lb. test.

Check Dick's Sporting Goods ads. They have it on sale quite often. The sale price and the rebate makes it a great deal.

Sunday, March 9, 2008

More Wirework Class - March 12

This is an intermediate class. You should have some previous wire wrapping experience.

Build on previous skills and learn techniques to make your own jump rings, ear wires, wrapped wire beads, pendant bails, clasps and other findings. Working with jigs will also be covered.
(Limit 8 students)

Supplies: Assortment of beads, various gauge wire
Cost: $20 + supplies

Sorry, no pictures this week.

All classes are on Wednesdays from 6:15pm - 8:45pm.

Make sure to sign-up at least 48 hours in advance.

If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment or email me at jewelrybyjules @ aol.com (remove spaces).

Here's the ad for AC Moore. It includes a 50% off coupon.

New Beads at Michaels

Just because I teach at AC Moore doesn't mean I don't check out the competition! LOL

When I saw the Michaels ad on Sunday the new bead section they advertised really caught my eye. I had to go check it out and I must say some of the new items are REALLY nice. My favorites are the "LINKED" bead line. I think I stood in front of that section for 20 minutes or so with a glazed look thinking up all of the great things I could make with them. A few of the employees were giving me weird looks because I was just standing there smiling. LOL

A lot of the other items are the same things they had before just in new packaging. I wish that places like AC Moore and Michaels carried more sterling and gold components. I know they don't usually carry "real" precious metals because they're more expensive. When you need something in a pinch it's easier to run to these stores.

AC Moore usually does their "jewelry reset" in April so I'm hoping that their new line has components like the ones at Michaels. I'd love to be able to incorporate these components into my classes.

OK. Enough rambling for tonight.

Happy beading!

Upcoming Bead Shows

I have to tell you. I just LOVE going to bead shows. I can still remember the first one I went to. My friend Mef and I drove to Newark, DE for an Intergalactic Bead Show. We were like kids in a candy shop. The minute I stepped into the room my heart started pounding and I almost hyperventilated! LOL

Last year we took two "beadventures" (bead + adventure) with some students from class. The first one we went to was an Innovative Bead Expo in Edison and the other one was Beadfest outside of Philly.

The reason bead shows are so great is that you see MANY more bead products than you do in places like AC Moore or Michaels. The prices are fantastic too. Everyone wears their own creations and you get lots of inspirations for your own work.

The next bead show in the area is The Whole Bead Show in NYC March 28-30. Here's the link: www.wholebead.com

The other show is an Innovative Beads Expo in Edison April 12-13. www.innovativebeadsexpo.com.

If anyone is interested in going to either of these shows let me know. I'm always up for another "beadventure"!

Happy Beading!

Freestyle/Bead Social Tonight

Sorry for the long gap in postings. I was away for a few weeks and when I got back I had several emergency repairs to deal with. Now I know why I lived in apartments for so long!!!

Last week was Intro. to Chain Maille/Jump Ring Jewelry. Everyone did a great job. I think everyone went home with at least 3 pair of earrings and the knowledge to make longer chains so they could make bracelets, necklaces or earrings.

There was a mix up at AC Moore and no class folder with sign up sheet was created for tonight's class. When people went to the store to sign up they couldn't. I apologize for that. From now on I'll make sure all of the folders are in place.

I haven't had the time to do my write ups for next month's classes yet but I promise to get to them later today.

Hope to see you soon. Happy Beading!

Fire Mountain Gems - New Catalog

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just got my new FMG Jewelry Maker's Comprehensive Catalog. This thing is HUGE!!! The catalog I usually get is the regular 448 page catalog. This one is 1,216 pages. I'm sure I'll be spending the next 2-3 hours pouring through the pages.

If you are interested in getting a free copy of the regular catalog you can get it here: http://www.firemountaingems.com/catreq.asp?lnksrc=3&navsrc=2. This catalog is a GREAT reference guide. Just ask Eileen who carted it through Beadfest last year in a wheeled suitcase!!!

The more items you buy the better the discount. Hopefully we'll be able to get a group buy together this time. Too many things converged against us last time.

Freestyle/Bead Social - Wednesday, January 30

Tomorrow night's class is the Freestyle/Bead Social. It'll be a fun night out. I've asked for the large classroom so we have more room to spread out. If I get a chance to bake I'll bring along some goodies to share.

Following is the "class" description:

Another Week Zipped By...

I don't know where the time is going. It seems like I blink my eyes and hours/days go by!

Last Wednesday we had a good class. Everyone made beautiful illusion necklaces. Even the beginners got the hang of it.

I just got a new camera so I'll be able to take pictures and post them here from now on.

Sunday, January 20, 2008

Happy Sunday!

Wow. Where did the week go?

We had a fun class last Wednesday. Just two students but we had a nice time. Sorry about the confusion about the classroom too. They seem to be having some communication problems in that store.

I'm just about finished with the schedule for February. I'll be emailing it to all of you in the next few days and I'll be posting it on here along with pictures. There won't be a class on the 6th. From now on I'm going to try to have one stitch class, one wire class and the Free Style/Bead Social each month. The other class(es) will be a students choice. (I'll explain how that works in another post.)

Thanks for voting in my "polls". It looks like we'll keep classes on Wednesday nights. If you and your friends would like to have a "Ladies Night Out" bead class at another time just let me know. We need at least two students for a class.

I'm hoping to take some pictures during upcoming classes so that I can post them here. Those of you that aren't attending classes can see what you're missing out on!!!

Have a GREAT week. I hope to see you soon!

Happy beading!

Spiral Stitch Class - January 16

You won't want to miss this class! Once you get the hang of it, the spiral stitch becomes addictive. Believe it or not, the samples below are all done with the same stitch. Varying the size and color of the beads gives each piece a different look. You can even add in focal beads and other embellishments. Project will be started in class but might not be completed. THIS IS A STITCH CLASS USING NEEDLE AND THREAD.
